You’ve experienced the benefits of CBD for yourself, or maybe you’ve heard your friends singing its praises, and you think, “could this work for my pets?”
There are all kinds of CBD products on the market for pets these days, and a lot of people are using them to calm anxious cats or ease joint pain in older dogs. But if you’re like most people, your pets are like family and you may have a few questions before giving them anything new. Here are some of the most common questions we’re hearing:
- How much CBD can I give my pet?
- How will it benefit my pet?
- Are there any side effects?
- Is it just for dogs and cats or can I give CBD to my other animals?
So let’s see if we can answer these questions one by one.
How much CBD can I give my pet?
Animals have an endocannabinoid system just like we do, meaning that their bodies have receptors that react to the chemical compounds in the hemp plant. Since scientists have yet to dive into research on this topic, there is no official recommended dosage for pets.
Our pet tincture is half the strength of our regular hemp oil, so it can be used with large or small pets, and we recommend starting somewhere around 12.5mL for most pets.
If your pet is under 10lbs, try half that amount at first. If they’re over 50lbs, you can start with a bit more. Ultimately, each pet is different and you’ll need to pay attention to how your pet reacts and talk to your veterinarian about it if they have any pre-existing health issues.
How will hemp products benefit my pet?
There are very few scientific studies on pets and CBD, so for now we have to rely on anecdotal evidence. We do know that animals have an endocannabinoid system like ours, so hemp may be a solution to similar problems like pain, inflammation, and anxiety.
We’ve heard pet owners say that hemp oil and other CBD products have helped their pets with separation anxiety, travel, seizures, and joint pain that often comes with aging.
Are there any side effects?
Like with humans, CBD appears to be pretty safe for pets. They may experience low blood pressure or dry mouth in some cases so make sure they stay hydrated. Another common side effect is drowsiness (but that may be what you’re going for!).
Since there has not been a lot of research on pets and hemp, we don’t know if there are more serious side effects, but so far people seem to be experiencing more benefits that drawbacks.
Is it just for dogs and cats?
While most of our furry customers are dogs and cats, we’ve had people purchase pet tincture for goats and hamsters! Since, as we mentioned above, animals have an endocannabinoid system, hemp products may benefit them just like they do humans.

Remember:
If you do decide to try hemp for your pet, make sure you start them with a low dose, and monitor their behavior afterwards. Talk to your vet throughout the process, and remember that different pets will react differently.
