4 Things To Know About CBD for Pets
By now we’ve all seen the stats about CBD use in humans and understand how the CBD market is growing week after week. But what we don’t hear about as often is information about CBD usage for companion animals – our dogs, cats, even birds and horses. It shouldn’t surprise you to learn that the CBD market for pets is exploding as much as it is for humans. But there are some important things to know about this facet of the industry, so let’s take a look at the four things to know about CBD use for pets.
For the sake of convenience in this article, we’ll mostly talk about dogs because thus far, they are the ones benefiting most often from CBD products, and they are the ones that manufacturers and retailers are most commonly targeting. But understand that CBD use is cats and horses are increasing, even pet birds are benefiting.
1. Market Size
First, the size of the pet CBD industry. CBD use for pets has been around a long time but it wasn’t always easy to get. Prior to the 2018 Farm Bill that legalized hemp, CBD was not as readily available, and most veterinarians were reluctant or unable to offer it to their clients. Now, hemp-based CBD for pets can be found just about everywhere. According to research conducted by The Brightfield Group, in 2017, pet CBD was an $8 million industry. Just one year later it quadrupled to $32 million, and is expected to skyrocket to $1.16 Billion by 2022, making it one of the fastest growing sectors of the CBD industry. It’s no wonder that manufacturers and retailers are pushing to get a piece of that market. Pet products will represent 3-5% of all CBD sales by 2025, according to the Pet Industry Green Paper by Neilsen and Headset. On top of that, nearly 75% of CBD buyers are pet parents. In most cases, if someone uses CBD him or herself, they are more open to giving it to their pet.”
